About the event

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Observed with great enthusiasm, the festival includes fasting, singing devotional songs, and re-enacting scenes from Krishna’s childhood, such as “Dahi Handi,” where groups break pots of curd hung high to mimic Krishna’s playful stealing of butter.

Devotees worship Krishna at midnight, believed to be the time of his birth. Temples are beautifully decorated, and Bhagavad Gita verses are recited. Janmashtami is widely celebrated in Mathura and Vrindavan, where Krishna spent his early years. Many people observe fasts and prepare special sweets like “panjiri” and “makhan.”
