About the event
Sri Krishna Jayanthi, also known as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September).
The festival is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm across India and among Hindu communities worldwide. Devotees observe fasts, chant Krishna's names, and read scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavata Purana, which narrate Krishna's life and teachings. Temples and homes are decorated, and images or idols of baby Krishna are placed in cradles and swings.
One of the key highlights of the celebration is the reenactment of episodes from Krishna's childhood, especially his mischievous deeds like stealing butter. In Maharashtra, for example, the Dahi Handi event involves forming human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high, mimicking Krishna's playful activities.
